What the heck is a growler, and why should I want one?
Growlers are the way to drink the best beer from your local craft brewery, and you’ve either probably never heard of it, or you have but never thought to use one – and we’re here to say that you totally should. Why?
· The beer is really fresh.
· It looks cool.
· You can grab seasonal and limited varieties that we don’t can.
· It’s the most environmentally friendly way to enjoy our ACB brews.
What is a growler?
Way before you could head down to the local Publix, ABC or Wawa, the only way to enjoy beer at home was to bring a container to your local pub and have it filled. These containers were traditionally galvanized steel pails with tight fittings lids. One theory is that the term growler comes from the sound of the carbonation escaping from the opened lid. Another stems from the buckets of beer factory workers were given at lunch before their stomachs started to growl from hunger.
Today, a growler is a large bottle or jug made of glass, ceramic or steel that you fill with draft beer. The new design is credited to Charlie Otto of Otto Brothers Brewing. In 1989, he was telling his father how he wanted to offer his beer to go but couldn’t afford the equipment to bottle it. His father reminisced about the beer pails of his youth, inspiring Otto to revamp the design into a glass jug.
How do I get an ACB growler?
We sell growlers in 32-ounce and 64-ounce sizes at both ACB locations: the Brewhouse and the Downtown Taproom. The first time, you’ll pay for the growler and the fill. After that, all you’re paying for is your fill! And if you fill on Thursdays, you’ll save even more.
Can you fill a non-ACB growler?
Yes, you can bring in your own growler, but it must have the Government Health Warning label on it. This is a non-negotiable.
How many beers are in my growler?
32-ounce = 2 pints
64-ounce = about 4 pints
How long is the beer good for?If properly stored, growlers can stay fresh for up to two weeks, but for the freshest and tastiest beer, finish your growler within 24 to 72 hours of opening it.
How do I clean my growler?
The best way to keep a growler clean is to rinse it thoroughly with hot water as soon as it’s empty and leave it upside down, cap off, to dry completely. Detergents and cleaning products can leave residues that affect the quality of beer, so it’s best to avoid those. If a growler ever gets particularly funky or incredibly dusty, it’s OK to use a very small amount of soap or detergent and rinse thoroughly with hot water until no more bubbles appear. Never use bleach or any harsh cleaning products. How do you know you’ve got a funky growler? If you take the cap off and it pops or you give it a sniff and it smells off, you’ve got funk. Then, feel free to use a drop of soap and hot water, let it soak, maybe even a soft-bristled brush to give it a scrub. Be sure to rinse really well and air dry. Store your empty growlers with the lid just slightly askew to allow some airflow.
